Tracking your fitness is very important. You would be able to know exactly if you are on the right track or not. Lately, people are going healthy in all corners of the globe. Everybody would like to know and understand their positions as far as health and fitness is concerned. Apart from helping one in knowing and becoming health and fitness conscious, knowing your health lets you acquire a high self-esteem. Having a high self-esteem would let one live stress free and very comfortable life both psychologically and physically. There are various ways which you may be able to track your fitness. One of them is through applications developed purposely to help you track your fitness level.
We have compiled a review comparing applications that help in tracking your nutrient intake. MyFitnessPal and MyPlate are nutrition tracking applications by Under Armor and Livestrong respectively. Both apps feature the capability of tracking activity level, tracking weight among other variables. Both of the apps have two versions. Both the paid and free versions. We are writing about the free versions here. It only takes a few taps to get it in your iPad. Although, the paid versions intricately report and track to detail. The most important part of all is the foundation, which entails tracking the nutrient intake of a person. Apparently, they are both worth the task depending on your immediate needs.
It’s been a year since I moved to Kigali, Rwanda from Washington DC, purposely for work. While living in Washington DC, I had quite long hours of walking and subway commuting. My Fitbit reflected a 12000 step walk each day. Well that has changed and gotten different while in Kigali. My daily commute is approximately a 6 to 7-minute distance between my house and my office. Not to include the sumptuousness of my wife’s cooking, my waist band in my pant grew tighter each time.
When I got back home, I decided that I would now track my food consumption. That was not enough to match the effort needed to tune down. I ramped my gymnasium and walking habits up. I have always used MyPlate website mostly, before I realized the new iPad application which looked nice. I used it to track my food consumption.
It was barely a long time before I encountered this great post courtesy of this excellent Apple focused blogger, Jim Dalrymple of Loop Insights. The post was about apple watch and MyFitnessPal also known as MFP on loosing 40 lbs., which you are highly recommended to take a step to access it. Well the blog incited me to curiously try using the MFP citing the great experience he got. With both merits and demerits, we recommend another great content on the two applications.
The Set Up
With a very simple procedure in setting things up, it features a weight generation ability for the user. It would request a few details about you which would include: height, gender, weight, level of activity (daily) and what target in terms of weight loss you would like to lose. To add on top, it generates the nutrient goals for example, how many grams of starch or proteins you are supposed to have. All that is automated.
The most challenging part when track how you eat, is the fact that you have to enter every detail of the food that you ingest. Well unfortunately, you may not avoid or make this process less involving. The only and most helpful part of the food consumption entry, is that there is a wide database of the groceries store and all restaurants that you may think of. One great thing and advantage would be if you know and remember what you eat regularly. This way you will not have to keep searching for the particular food every now and then.
As reflected in both applications, the first thing that you are required to do is, first tap the type of meal that you would like to get a track off. From breakfast, lunch and dinner or even a brunch. You do not have to keep searching for a particular food if you remember it. The only way you would have to follow and never run away from is the frequent list of what you take. This is an entry panel that forms from your commonly eaten foods. The moment you change your diet; you will have to search for it when entering it in the data entry section.
There is a thin line between the applications when it comes to finding the correct foods. They almost perform the same. The food items that are sold in a majority of fast food restaurants are available both in fresh and packaged foods. As a matter of fact, I had tried to search for food items that I thought were so obscure. In my thinking, I knew they not be found. To my surprise I found a variety of them. An example was shiro wat or Ethiopian njera.
Personalization is key in the current century. Using MFP would hold a slight edge in this. It actually remembers even the portioning that you have frequently. On the other hand, MyPlate does it differently. It recommends the portion or size, which you should adjust. A good example is my case. I enjoy and often eat Cheerios served with a half a cup of soy milk. Despite the stock portion size of both applications is 1-cup, MFP would personalize the portion to a half a cup of the soy milk. MyPlate initiates me form 1 cup to ½ a cup each time.
Regular Nutrient Reporting
The two apps consolidate the amount of calories that you have taken at the end of the day. This includes the 3 macro nutrients that is carbohydrates, protein and fats. Not to talk the micro nutrients as well. MFP feeds you with a very detailed report of your health and fitness information. MyPlate is highly recommended in this case.
MyPlate gives a data presentation in large and colorful graphs which enable you to track a variety of nutrients for as long as 1 week, 1 month, 2, 3, 6 or even 12 months. You have the ability to also have a track of macronutrients, sugars, cholesterol, dietary fiber and sodium. The visual compellation by MyPlate app graphs is great, more so when I revisit my calorie goals shown by the red bars. Apparently, that can be my personal preference, which may vary from person to person.
The daily average compared to the same periods are not visible in the free version of MyPlate. It would be of great help if ii could have a comparison between my average daily calorie count in January and March. My iPad provides this information, and the same applies to my Apple iPhone health application, which provides the daily averages. That is a two-step process and is less convenient.
MFP does it quite different. It provides all the information and not leaving out the daily average intakes depending on the time frame that you have chosen. MFP offers a larger number of nutrients to track daily. MFP issues you with crisp and detailed tracking information on the daily average app tracking.
MFP slightly becomes a disappointment when you want to synchronize it with the health kit application. Setting up MyPlate was not easier either but transferring data was almost immediate. It was seamless and fast. MFP could not easily connect to the Health Kit. It could only connect after tones of procedures which were tiresome. After a whole struggle to synchronize the apps, MFP stopped transferring data and only displays “no data”. I decided to go for help in the MFP forums. A bigger number of the participants were referring me to the original guidelines. I also received a response from twitter which referred me to an email that was never helpful to me.
The two apps are both awesome for providing very useful information in relation to your nutrition. As far as eating healthy is concerned, we highly recommend the two applications to provide useful information to you as a user. Depending on various questions that we ask ourselves about tracking health and fitness, some of them can be answered by both applications.
