An easy way to switch between different open applications on Mac OS X is by holding the command key and pressing Tab. But you may have noticed this switches only between open Applications. What if you have more then one open instance/window of the running application? How to you quickly switch between two open Word documents?
This is how:
To switch between two instances of the same application (between two Preview windows for example) try the “Command + `” combination. It’s the key right above the tab key on the mac keyboard. This allows you to switch between two windows of the same app, and works with most applications.
Another time saving shortcut is “Control + Tab” within a web browser. This allows you to quickly switch between open tabs. Works in Safari, Firefox, and Chrome.
A bit awkward at first, but a real time saver once you get the hang of it.
Thanks!
Super helpful. Thanks!
Very useful thanks
So much fluff for a simple shortcut. You could’ve just said “Cmd + `” on the first line.
If you wanna add more details, you can explain how to change this shortcut and how to set it if it doesn’t work.
I don’t understand when people say “command + ‘”
What does the ‘ stand for …. ie I press the command key + what other key?
this key: `
It’s the back-tick ` symbol. On my macbook keyboard it’s the key to the left of ‘z’. On windows keyboards it’s usually to the left of ‘1’
This is basic. The query is I want is to switch between different windows of the same application open in different Desktops(To be more specific: I have 2 chrome windows opened in different desktops say Desktop1 and Desktop2. Now I want to switch to desktop 1 chrome window to desktop 2 chrome window which is not possible by Command ` (Backtick).Any suggestions on how to achieve this?
I js got to know..
Simply swipe left or right with 3 fingers (but not from the edge of trackpad) in Mac to change the desktop, which is way more easier than typing shortcut.
I am also wandering for the same answer.
Thanks,
Praful
I google mostly everything but WHY DID I ONLY SEARCH FOR THIS NOW? it’s 2019 and it’s just today that I learned this argh. SMH. I’ve always wondered how to do this since transitioning to Mac from Microsoft’s Alt-Tab but I always assumed that command-tab was its only counterpart. I’ve always thought that the alt-tabbing between windows of an app was what I miss most about windows and that Mac not having this was what I don’t like the most about Macs but boy was I so wrong. I love this command-tab and command-~! if only I had known this before, I wouldn’t have needed to switch between so many desktops and would have spared myself years of headaches.
